Custom Prisms

custom prisms, infrared prisms, ATR prismsThere are a variety of optical prisms available and Knight Optical is able to provide custom orders manufactured to our customers individual requirements. Prisms are most commonly used to disperse white light into its component wavelengths (colours), however, there are also prisms which change the placement of an image via displacement, rotation or deviation of the light beam.

Below are our typical manufacturing capabilities, however these can vary for different prisms types and more specialist materials, including infrared crystalline materials such as germanium and zinc selenide, which are common substrates for ATR crystals used in FTIR spectrometers.

Coatings

Knight Optical can also apply a wide range of coatings to your optical prism to ensure it is designed for its intended purpose:

  • Antireflective (AR) coatings, including broadband coatings, can be applied to optimise the transmission at certain wavelengths or across a range. An AR coating is often applied to entry and exit faces to improve the efficiency.
  • Mirror coatings can be applied to prism surfaces, the hypotenuse of right angle prisms are often coated to be used as an external reflector.
  • Surfaces can be blackened to reduce any stray light that can enter/exit the prism, and increase the efficiency of internal reflection.

Quality Assurance

  • The flatness and irregularity of a prism surface is tested on our Zygo Verifire XPZ interferometer, where we can also test the beam deviation of corner cube prisms.
  • We check the surface angular tolerances on our Trioptics PrismMaster which is accurate to 3 arc seconds. This instrument can also be used to measure beam deviation.
  • Transmission and reflection scans are conducted on our Agilent Cary 7000 Spectrophotomer which can perform spectral scans at multiple angles of incidence and different polarisations.
  • We can also test infrared optical components on our Agilent Cary 660 FTIR spectrometer.
  • All optics are 100% visually inspected before packaging, our staff are trained to ISO 10110 and MIL-0-13830A, and can check down to 10/5 scratch/dig which is especially critical in laser applications.
