Exciting New Study for MRI-Guided Laser Ablation treating Epilepsy underway!
New Study for MRI-Guided Laser Ablation treating Epilepsy
Lasers are in wide use in the Medical industry treating and identifying an ever increasing range of ailments and conditions. Their use is now spreading into ever wider cosmetic and reconstruction techniques with patients enjoying the advantage of these increasing ranges of treatments.
In addition to a wider range of treatments available to patients around the world, they can reap the benefit of far less invasive techniques than available before as a result of the successful implementation of guided lasers.
We await with eager anticipation the results of trials of a new developmental laser which has been adapted from a proven design, now targeting a specific type of epilepsy (MTLE).
Medtronics have documented their research and through a released news article, detail how a new MRI-Guided laser ablation will help treat a common form of epilepsy. This is exciting news and offers renewed hope for the millions of sufferers across the globe.
They are currently undertaking clinical studies now and this is how it works:
“The Visualase MRI-Guided Laser Ablation System is 510(k) cleared by the FDA to necrotize or coagulate soft tissue in neurosurgery and other surgical specialties. Through a minimally invasive procedure, laser energy is delivered to the target area using a laser applicator. As light is delivered through the laser applicator, temperatures in the target area begin to rise, coagulating the unwanted soft tissue under real-time MRI guidance.”
This study trial of laser ablation treatment, when successful, will provide detailed insight enabling development of new range of treatments to sufferers of MTLE (mesial temporal lope epilepsy), many of whom have resistance against the current drug treatments.
Is this just the tip of the iceberg? We hope these trials may provide insight into other areas where MRI-guided lasers can suggest trials and treatments to help combat other possible medical conditions, paving the way for less invasive treatments for sufferers of many different types of medical conditions.
