Cube Polarisers


Knight Optical is able to supply custom Cube polarizers for use in the UV, visual, and NIR wavebands (<0.4 to >1.6µm).  The Cube polarizer consists of two 90° prisms that are made, for example, from an optical glass short flint or equivalent, SF6 or equivalent , that have hypotenuses that are cemented together with the polarizing thin film coating that is deposited upon the hypotenuse.  This coating can be tuned, by varying the thin film coating, to shift the polarization range from about 0.4µm to about 1.6µm.  Anti-reflection coatings are applied to the four windows.  The extinction ratio for SF6 or equivalent  is about 1,000:1, which means that they can be used as replacement for the calcite polarizers in less demanding situations.  The extraordinary ray is transmitted and undeviated whilst the ordinary ray is reflected by 90° by the thin film coating of the cube.  This gives nearly equal intensity in each polarization.

These custom Cube polarizers are available in sizes up to about 25-50mm square that fit into the assembly kits available on request.
