Knight optical’s range of precsion optics for LiDAR Applications

6th Jun 2018

Knight Optical provide custom and stock precision optical components for the latest LiDAR systems. Our components are utilized in atmospheric monitoring, topographical, laser guiding and ranging instruments used in the harshest environments. These include high grit and sand levels and extreme temperatures in arctic and desert climates.

LiDAR systems are used in monitoring wind speeds and directions on proposed and existing wind farm sites. This leads to wind farm optimizations through resulting increases in energy outputs. This gain in performance is achieved from the LiDAR system which is mounted to the nacelle of wind turbines automating the adjustment of blades to increase energy generations. The adjustments to the blades are due to the Doppler LiDAR system measuring the frequency shift of the backscattered light and thus calculating the wind velocity.

Knight Optical’s offer the following optics for Lidar Applications

Front coated mirrors

Optimized for maximum reflectivity at 1550nm or other ranges in the visible or NIR spectrum

Other coatings to maximize reflection at a required wavelength are available with sheet sizes up to 1 meter square.

Cover windows

Designed from tough materials able to withstand impact damage as well as scratches from high grit environments, these windows protect the vital components of the LiDAR system and can be AR coated for improved transmission over LiDAR wavelengths. Typical materials used are Sapphire and UV grade fused silica

Materials span the visible and NIR spectrum and include:

Sapphire, silicon, BK7, quartz, fused silica, toughened borosilicate and many more.

These windows can also be provided with hydrophobic coatings which help minimize the impact of air pollution.

Optical filters

Stocked in a wide range of types and wavelengths or optimized for 1550nm.

Lenses

High precision, AR coated Doublet lenses and Planoconvex as part of the receiving and delivery optics in a range of materials. These lenses are suited for laser alignment and beam shaping in lasers.

Our Lidar optics are checked for quality in our state-of-the-art Metrology laboratory using equipment from Trioptics, Varian and Starret allowing us to work to the highest QA standards and meet the tolerance specifications on these precision components.
