Optical Toughening

Knight Optical can strengthen glass via controlled thermal or chemical treatment.  Tempering puts the outer surfaces into compression and the inner surfaces into tension, increasing the strength compared to normal glass.

Such stresses cause the glass, when broken to crumble into smaller chunks of glass instead of splintering into jagged shards, so there is  less chance to cause injury.

As a result of its safety and strength, toughened glass is used in a variety of demanding applications.
