Calcite optical components

Calcite (CaCO3) is a strongly birefringent material known for its use in polarizers. It is structurally anisotropic and has two refractive indices. The material is reactive to weak acids and has a low solubility in water, a trait which decreases with water temperature. Consequently a protective coating is recommended. Nevertheless Calcite cuts and polishes well. Calcite transmits at over 75% in the 0.3-2.3μm range making it appropriate for use in the IR and VIS spectrum.

Calcite is typically used in Glan-Laser and Glan-Taylor polarizers where the relatively soft material is protected by a metal housing. Calcite’s optical properties make it ideal for this application. The material can be used in windows and retarders and other optical components where transmission between the 0.3-2.3μm spectrum is desired, but other materials may be more suitable to the role.
