Liquid Crystal Variable Retarders
Liquid Crystal Variable retarders work by applying a voltage across the glass or silica plates, which are electrically conductive, have the liquid crystal between them. As the voltage across the plates is varied the alignment of the liquid crystal material will alter. The alteration of the liquid changes the effective birefringence and thus the retardation of the input beam. The liquid crystal media and the coatings on the silica plates will transmit from about 400nm to 1.8µm. The crystal retarders are birefringent elements that transform the polarisation state by inducing different phase shifts between the orthogonal electric field components of the electromagnetic waves. The optical device will be achromatic and the polarization can be precisely controlled over a wide range of wavelengths. This makes the retarder suited to applications that involve perception or recording of multiple channels at the same time and at different wavelengths.
