Rod & Cone Mirrors
Knight Optical supply custom cone mirrors and custom 45° rod mirrors for use from UV (200 to 400nm) to the IR (0.7 to 1.1µm) wavebands. The cone and 45° rod mirrors that are custom made, include the following range:
Custom cone rod mirrors: are manufactured from a suitable substrate dependent on application, usually BK7 or equivalent or quartz. One end is ground and polished into a cone, much like a rocket nosecone or pencil tip and the other end ground flat. This tip is coated with a reflective coating, such as aluminium or gold dependent on wavelength you are working at. Custom cone mirrors are used, for example, to produce 360° illumination when light is directed toward the cone and is reflected into a circular plane with the rod lens at its centre. Another use is to allow for 360° surveillance of an area by directing the observable scene onto a suitable imager.
Custom 45° rod mirrors: Custom 45° rod mirrors are made by slicing an end off the rod at an angle of 45°, this produces an elliptical mirror that appears circular at 90°, and along the axis, for steering a beam onto a different optical path. The small units can be used, for example, to provide a beam a steering unit for a borescope or fibrescope.
Custom 45° and custom cone mirrors can be manufactured to any reasonable diameter and size and vacuum coated with a range of coatings dependent on application.
Some typical coatings for your custom cone and 45° rod mirrors include:
- Enhanced aluminium coating, 94% reflectivity for use in visible applications.
- 99.9% dielectric coating for laser use in visible applications.
- UV aluminium coating for use in UV applications down to 180nm.
- 98.5% NIR dielectric coating for laser use in the near infra-red region.
- Ion plated protected silver coating for use in NIR to 2000nm.
- Protected gold coating for use from 750nm to far infra-red applications.
