Calcite (CaCO3) is a strongly birefringent material known for its use in polarisers. It is structurally anisotropic and has two refractive indices. The material is reactive to weak acids and has a low solubility in water, a trait which decreases with water temperature. Consequently a protective coating is recommended. Nevertheless calcite cuts and polishes well. Calcite transmits at over 75% in the 0.3-2.3μm range making it appropriate for use in the IR and VIS spectrum.
Calcite is typically used in Glan-Laser and Glan-Taylor polarisers where the relatively soft material is protected by a metal housing. Calcite’s optical properties make it ideal for this application. The material can be used in windows and retarders and other optical components where transmission between 0.3 and 2.3μm is desired, but other materials may be more suitable to the role.
