Parabolic Mirrors

Knight Optical supply a range of custom parabolic mirrors for use from UV (200 to 400nm) to the IR (1to 40µm) wavebands. The parabolic mirrors that are custom made, include the following range:

Custom Off-axis parabolic metal mirrors and precision parabolic mirrors: Knight Optical is able to supply custom off-axis parabolic mirrors and custom precision parabolic mirrors that can operate over a very wide waveband, for example, from below 200nm to beyond 50µm.  The off-axis parabolic mirrors have a range of off-axis angles, such as 15° to 90° in, for example, 15° intervals.  Custom parabolic mirrors are made from thin films of material that have differing refractive indices and thickness. The mirrors will be achromatic across all wavelengths as the rays are focused by a mirror that has no chromatic aberration. However, other aberrations form part of the design. The parabolic mirror will focus all of its on-axis rays to a single point. But, with the rays coming in at, for example, a few degrees above the axis will produce aberrations that spoil the image quality. Hence, whole parabolic mirrors for on-axis and near off-axis rays produce acceptable images and are used for astronomical mirrors. The off-axis parabolic is a small section cut from the whole mirror. The effect is to minimize the off-axis aberrations that would be there for the ‘whole’ parabolic mirror, but at the cost of having a small section from the ‘whole’

The picture top left shows detail of off-axis parabolic mirror units. The mirrors can be supplied in suitable storage cases, such as a foam filled energy absorbing material that will, with the tough case exterior, protect the parabolic mirror.

Our custom ranges of parabolic mirrors can be supplied with a full range of coatings as follows:

  • Enhanced aluminium coating, 94% reflectivity for use in visible applications.
  • 99.9% dielectric coating for laser use in visible applications.
  • UV aluminium/Mgf² coating for use in UV applications down to 180nm.
  • 98.5% NIR dielectric coating for laser use in the near infra-red region.
  • Ion plated protected silver coating for use in NIR to 2000nm.
  • Protected gold coating for use from 750nm to far infra-red applications.

Parabolic mirrors are used in a range of infrared instruments including FLIR systems. Scatter is high for standard surface finish.  However, with extreme care it is possible to reduce the surface scatter so that the mirrors can be used in the visible waveband.

Knight Optical supply high quality parabolic mirrors made to your exact specification. Every component is individually tested by our highly skilled technicians in our state of art metrology lab to ensure all components meet our high quality standards.
